Sport is an important part of the boys’ development and wellbeing, and is a compulsory activity for all boys at Wetherby Senior School. It is a wonderful activity for developing character, building friendships and staying healthy, both physically and mentally. The lessons learned and relationships forged through sport will hold our boys in good stead to make meaningful contributions to society.

Sports Grounds & Facilities

We are fortunate to be able to offer our pupils the opportunity to train at a modern and versatile sporting facility, home to the Ealing Trailfinders rugby union and cricket teams as well as the London Broncos rugby league team.

The breadth of facilities benefit boys who play the winter team sports of rugby and football, but also those boys who wish to play tennis, cricket or train in the gym facilities. The facilities enable us to build on the foundation that has been laid in the School’s first three years and continue to provide high quality sports provision for all. Recent successes, particularly the U15 football team reaching the quarter-finals of a national cup, show the potential for sport at Wetherby Senior School and these new facilities support that development.

Youth Athletic Development was introduced to Wetherby in 2018 as a sport designed to continually challenge, both physically and mentally, students of diverse athletic ability and utilises the fully equipped gym and weights room in Marylebone.

Rugby is highly regarded at Wetherby, aligned with the School’s values of courage, perseverance and respect. In games we offer both ‘competitive’ and ‘recreational’ rugby groups to ensure pupils have the highest level of progression and enjoyment. Boys are encouraged to express themselves with the ball in hand. The boys participate in the CALM Cup and the term closes with a fiercely competitive inter-trib rugby tournament for all year groups.

Football is very popular at Wetherby. With most year groups putting out two teams, there is an abundance of competition for all pupils wishing to feature, whether in competitive or recreational football squads.

Boys are taught a wide curriculum of football, focusing on a range of skills and game play. Boys will learn skills through both drills and open games, finding the ball at their feet for the majority of every session. Boys are encouraged to express themselves with the ball. The boys participate in the ESFA and ISFA Football Competitions, the Marylebone Cup and the football term culminates with a very competitive inter-trib football tournament for all year groups.

Wetherby boys are great supporters of their cricket, tennis and athletics and are always excited about the summer term. Wetherby uses the abundant facilities at Ealing Trailfinders for these sports to great effect.

A large number of additional activities are offered every day, taken by Games staff, subject teachers and professional coaches. The clubs on offer during the autumn, spring and summer terms include gym, table tennis, yoga, basketball, boxercise and running.

The Sports department also run a number of overseas tours. In recent years the boys have been on a football tour to Spain and a rugby tour to France.
