Sport

At Wetherby Senior, sport is a compulsory activity across all years. Our wide array of activities, with state-of-the-art facilities, help our boys develop character, build friendships and stay healthy, both physically and mentally.

Sports grounds and facilities

Behind the trademark red doors of our Marylebone Lane building lies a treasure trove of sporting facilities for all our young people to enjoy. This includes a fully-equipped strength and conditioning suite, a superb spin studio, an excellent boxercise studio, and space of yoga. All prove popular for lunchtime and after-school clubs.

Our central London location also ensures easy use of nearby state-of-the-art facilities, like Ealing Trailfinders, which our pupils visit several times a week. Here, our boys benefit from equipment and pitches also used by professional rugby and cricket teams.

The breadth of facilities available, both at our School and away from Marylebone , ensures participation in football, rugby, tennis, cricket,  youth athletic development and spin. We also offer athletics, basketball, swimming, yoga, table tennis and running, to name just a few of our available options.

Sports teams and fixtures

Although Wetherby Senior’s sports programme is inclusive, it’s also challenging, with weekly fixtures providing a packed timetable for our numerous sports teams. This includes participation in external competitions alongside inter-Trib events. All enable our boys to build valuable skills and experience, represent our School or their Trib, and make lifelong friends.

Before the pandemic, a number of overseas tours would take place each year. At present, our School’s Sport Department receives an avalanche of bookings for our annual ski trips to Italy and Canada.

Top sports

Football remains very popular at Wetherby Senior. With most year groups putting out two teams, there is an abundance of competition for all pupils to enjoy, whether in competitive or recreational football squads. Our boys participate in the ESFA and ISFA Football Competitions, and the Marylebone Cup, while our football term culminates with a very competitive inter-Trib football tournament for all years.

Rugby is highly regarded so we offer both ‘competitive’ and ‘recreational’ rugby groups, to ensure our pupils have the highest level of progression and enjoyment. Our boys participate in the CALM Cup and our winter term closes with a fiercely competitive inter-Trib rugby tournament for all years.

Cricket, tennis and athletics are highly sought after during our summer months, with our boys using the fantastic facilities at Ealing Trailfinders to great effect.

A bespoke programme

In addition to encouraging a lifelong interest in sport, our Sport Department remains keen to ensure pupils further improve their mobility and athletic development. To this end, since early 2022, our School has partnered with FMS Schools to introduce a new functional movement programme, with each pupil involved given a personalised development pathway to support balance, mobility and postural control, and help with injury prevention.

Using the FMS software allows our young people to gain a greater understanding of how to move and breathe efficiently, as well as giving each boy an individualised programme to improve their physical literacy. Having access to this platform further enhances the provision our School offers and supports an ongoing involvement in regular physical activities to ensure a healthy and active life.
