Academic excellence is central to Wetherby Senior; we aim to develop and foster intellectual curiosity so that boys can thrive at school and beyond.

Our aim is for the boys to develop a love of learning and that they become adept at learning. To this end the boys do some of their prep in supervised sessions in years 7-9 and discuss how they learn most effectively both in lessons and in dedicated PSHE sessions.

Whilst believing in solid pedagogical evidence that handwriting and aspects of the traditional classroom such as learning facts are an essential element of education, we also believe in innovation. Use of Microsoft Teams and Class Notebooks is now fully integrated into our teaching and learning. The boys benefit from varied and stimulating teaching where high expectations for all underpins each lesson. We expect all boys to be engaged with their learning and give regular feedback so that they can develop and improve.

Effort is central to the Wetherby Senior School values wheel and all boys are rewarded for effort. We firmly believe that our excellent academic results are a product of the philosophy that all pupils can improve at every stage of their education.

The School Day

The school day consists of six periods, each lasting an hour. In addition there is a tutor period of thirty minutes on Fridays. Younger pupils have a study period to complete some homework tasks. There is a mid-morning break of fifteen minutes and a lunch break of fifty-five minutes. The lunch break and Friday activities slot allow for pupils to engage in a wide range of co-curricular activities.

Games is timetabled in two sessions each week. Assembly is held on Friday afternoon, after which the teaching week finishes. The remaining time on a Friday is used for departmental administration and INSET.
