Political power

Wetherby Senior pupils have gained a valuable insight into politics and power at a fascinating debate between a top historian and a former politician.

This week, our pupils were lucky to be able to attend an Intelligence Squared discussion between Mary Beard, the world-leading scholar on ancient Rome, and Rory Stewart, who served under David Cameron and Theresa May, and stood to be Leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister in the 2019 leadership contest.

Ms Neilson, Wetherby Senior’s Head of History, accompanied our boys. She said: “Both speakers were hugely impressive. Mary Beard always makes insightful comments, while Rory Stewart was very articulate and provided an excellent understanding of the life of a minister and its limitations, plus his views on the Prime Ministers that he had worked with!

“We learnt a lot about how power can corrupt and also got to see that those in power – whether Caesar or a modern Prime Minister – have much less power than one might expect.”

Intelligence Squared offers agenda-setting talks and discussions with some of the world’s greatest minds and orators, meaning Wetherby Senior pupils have enjoyed debates with the former FBI director, James Comey, and with Michael Lewis, author of The Big Short.

Wetherby Senior sixth formers have been snapping around London, taking photos of what our capital city means to them.
