Examining ecosystems

Wetherby Senior biologists took their studies out of the classroom and into the field, on a research trip to Hyde Park.

A Level biologists from Years 12 and 13 trekked off to the nearby Royal Park last week, to undertake core practical work that would further develop their scientific skills and understanding.

Ms Badham, Head of Biology at Wetherby Senior, explains: “Our young scientists were investigating different sampling techniques and using them to investigate relationships between biotic and abiotic factors, which are what make up ecosystems. Biotic factors are living things within an ecosystem (such as plants, animals and bacteria) while abiotic factors are non-living components (like water, soil and atmosphere). The way these components interact is critical in an ecosystem.

“During our time in Hyde Park, our sixth formers completed a transect, which is a line across a habitat or part of a habitat. This enabled our Years 12 and 13 to undertake observations within their transect, thus gaining valuable scientific experience that was literally in the field!”

A Level Biology provides Wetherby Senior’s sixth formers with a fascinating opportunity to learn more about the natural world and all the living things within it.

Wetherby Senior sixth formers have been snapping around London, taking photos of what our capital city means to them.
