Reading under the sun

Whether relaxing on a beach, sitting in a city park or chilling at home, Wetherby Senior pupils have an exciting and eclectic range of books to read this summer.

Our School’s holiday reading recommendations – developed by our School Librarian, Mr Munday, and our English Department – are age appropriate texts covering different genres and themes. All are certain to keep boys gripped during the summer months.

Ms Murray, Head of English, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming our new Year 7 to Marylebone this autumn, where their first English lessons will look at detective fiction. While our incoming Year 7 do not need to complete any specific preparation or reading before joining in September, Mr Munday has put together a lovely list of books they can enjoy over the holiday.”

For our newest pupils, Mr Munday’s recommendations are:
Lu by Jason Reynolds
A Darkness of Dragons by SA Patrick
Boy 87 by Ele Fountain
The Summer We Turned Green by William Sutcliffe

Ms Murray added: “We will also be welcoming new faces into Year 9 this autumn, where their first English lessons will be on dystopian fiction. Again, no specific preparation is required by our incoming Year 9, whether boys are currently in Year 8 at Wetherby Senior or joining us from another school. Mr Munday’s list includes an action adventure, a dystopian thriller, a coming-of-age story, and a spy thriller, and I’m sure all will keep pupils entertained this summer.”

For our new Year 9, Mr Munday’s recommendations are:
Thirteen by Christopher Hoyle
Maladpted by Richard Kurti
Trememdous Things by Susin Nielsen
Agent 21 by Chris Ryan

For Wetherby Senior’s current Years 7 and 8, who will be moving into Years 8 and 9 this autumn, Mr Munday’s reading recommendations include the high octane adventure Cyberspies by Logan Macx; a gripping historical thriller in Bali Rai’s Mohinder’s War; a gory thriller with Bite Risk by SJ Wills; and a magnificent fable in Zana Fraillon’s The Lost Soul Atlas.

Finally, for Year 9 pupils moving into Year 10, Mr Munday’s recommendations are designed to get boys reading, so they are well prepared to start their GCSE studies this autumn.

Ms Murray explains: “Within our English Department, boys will be examining a variety of texts over their two years of GCSE study. However, as we will cover all texts in class, there is no expectation for boys to read these books over the summer. Instead, Mr Munday’s recommendations are designed to encourage boys to read for pleasure and to read as much as possible!”

For our new Year 10, Mr Munday’s recommendations are:
Dark Matter by Michelle Paver
Dry by Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely

Happy summer reading!
