Sport science success

Members of Wetherby Senior’s Year 9 gained a fascinating insight into the life of a professional athlete this week.

As part of Wednesday’s Field Day, a number of pupils visited St Mary’s University in Twickenham, which is renowned for its sports facilities and sport science degrees. During their visit, our pupils got to use the institution’s state-of-the art sport science testing facilities, trialling equipment used by professional athletes and working with world-leading sports scientists.

Mr Fuller, Director of Sport at Wetherby Senior, explained: “Our boys took part in different sessions with the brilliant staff from St Mary’s, including fitness testing and athletic development, and also learned more about injury prevention. All of this ensured our boys got a firsthand experience of the physical preparation undertaken by professional athletes, plus a fantastic understanding of all that goes into participation in high performance sports.

“This was an amazing opportunity to use state-of-the art sports science technology and facilities at a well-respected university – even Mr Willis and Mr Stokoe got to enjoy some fitness testing! It was also a great experience for our boys who have opted to take GCSE Physical Education next year.”

St Mary’s University in Twickenham is internationally renowned for sport, offering a range of sport science degrees and world-class facilities that are constantly used by professional athletes, including rugby teams, athletes, tennis players, Formula One drivers and American football stars.
