Wetherby Senior Will Rock You

Wetherby Senior’s annual Live Lounge Concert provided an unforgettable evening of raw talent and incredible performances.

Taking place just before half-term, our young musicians put on a remarkable display of musical prowess, from the moment the first note rang out to the final thunderous applause from an appreciative audience.

Mr Martin, Director of Music, explained: “Year 9 took the stage first, and their performance left an indelible mark. Ihsan A, Arun A and Antonio P kicked off the night with their rendition of Better Call Saul by Porter. Arun’s singing was tight and the band’s stage presence captivating. We were then treated to an awe-inspiring drum solo by Danny F, who flawlessly showcased his skill during Song 2, by Blur, and this excitement continued as Omar S unleashed a powerful drum solo, perfectly capturing the spirit of AC/DC’s Back in Black.

“Next up was Year 10, who took the energy of the evening to new heights. Luke T, Sam M and Danny F delivered an electrifying performance of the classic Money, by Pink Floyd-Waters. Luke’s guitar solo during Jigsaw Puzzle Blues, by Kirwan, was a true standout moment, showcasing his exceptional talent and artistry. And Aarav S’s breathtaking drum solo during Smells Like Teen Spirit, by Nirvana, left the crowd in awe and clamouring for more.”

Following this, Year 8 musicians brought a touch of classic rock to the stage, enchanting the audience with their renditions of Led Zeppelin’s Fool In the Rain and Kashmir.

Mr Martin said: “Iggy B, Ihsan A and Cameron B displayed a level of musicianship beyond their years, perfectly capturing the essence of these iconic songs. Ziad B’s drum solo, during We Will Rock You by Queen, added an extra layer of excitement, getting our entire audience clapping and stomping along.

“Finally, Year 7 set the stage on fire with their infectious energy. Led by Kian B, Josh K, Mikey W, Iggy B, and Paul B, they opened with a rocking rendition of Are You Gonna Go My Way by Lenny Kravitz, immediately getting the crowd on their feet. They seamlessly transitioned into the electrifying Hell Ain’t a Bad Place to Be by AC/DC, leaving everyone craving for more.”

All agreed that Wetherby Senior’s Live Lounge concert was a testament to the incredible talent and passion of our young people, with each performance showcasing the dedication and hard work that went into preparing for the event. The audience was captivated from start to finish, witnessing a showcase of musical brilliance that will be remembered for years to come.

Mr Martin added: “In the midst of these electrifying performances, it is important to acknowledge the driving force behind our pupils’ musical growth and passion for rock music. Mr McKean, our dedicated music teacher, deserves a heartfelt thank you for his unwavering commitment and extensive knowledge. His guidance and expertise have been instrumental in nurturing talent at Wetherby Senior, while his understanding of rock music – from its roots to its modern-day evolution – has shaped the musical journey our young people. From introducing boys to iconic bands and songs, to teaching  the technical aspects of their instruments, Mr McKean has instilled a deep appreciation for rock music within each pupil.

“Beyond his role as an educator, Mr McKean has fostered a supportive and inclusive environment where our young people can freely express their love for rock music. He has encouraged boys to explore their own musical identities and push their boundaries, helping them discover their unique strengths and talents. With his guidance, Mr McKean has not only nurtured individual musicians but also cultivated a sense of camaraderie and collaboration among our boys. The collective energy and synergy, witnessed on stage at our Live Lounge, are a testament to his dedication and ability to inspire the young rock stars of tomorrow.”

All at Wetherby Senior would like to thank Mr McKean for his unwavering dedication and passion for rock music education, and for igniting the rock ‘n’ roll spirit at our School.
