Stunning summer showcase

The extraordinary talent of Wetherby Senior’s young musicians was on display this week, with dazzling and captivating performances at our School’s summer showcase.

Wednesday’s program, carefully curated by Mr Martin, Wetherby Senior’s Director of Music, showcased the immense skill and dedication of our School’s musicians from various instrumental disciplines. From classical masterpieces to contemporary favourites, this concert offered a diverse range of musical experiences that left our audience spellbound.

Mr Martin said: “Our evening began with Edward P’s enchanting violin rendition of Nocturne by Lili Boulanger and Edward’s mastery of the instrument was evident, as he effortlessly conveyed the emotional depth of the piece. Following this, Patrick M took the stage with his cello, delivering a stunning performance of the vibrant and energetic Allegro, from the Sonata in G minor, by Chinzer. Patrick’s expressive playing captured the essence of the composition, captivating the audience.

“Next, Iggy B enchanted the crowd with his piano performance of River Flows in You, by Yiruma, as his delicate, yet powerful, notes resonated throughout the auditorium, evoking a sense of tranquility. Gabriel B showcased his violin skills with Si Ji Ge, a Chinese traditional piece. Gabriel’s passionate and soulful rendition transported our audience to another time and place, capturing the essence of Chinese music. Josh K’s performance on the violin was equally mesmerizing, as his rendition of Chiquilin de Bachin, by Asher Piazzolla, blended elegance and intensity, showcasing his virtuosity and command over the instrument.

“Our first piano performance came from Daniel H. His Lento, by Fibich, offered a serene and introspective experience, highlighting Daniel’s technical precision and musical sensitivity.”

Following these solo performances, Wetherby Senior’s Year 7 Violin Group, comprising violinists and violists, took the stage, with their arrangements of Sailing Home and Can Can. Mr Martin explained: “Our group’s synchronized performance demonstrated their teamwork and dedication to their craft, leaving the audience thoroughly entertained. Cellists Benito K, Zade S, Dylan S, and Mohammed AH presented a diverse range of musical styles.

“Benito’s rendition of the Scottish traditional song My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean showcased his emotional depth, while Zade’s performance of Rowing Boat & So There, by Blackwell, demonstrated his technical prowess. Dylan’s City Lights and Mohammed’s The Flintstones brought a contemporary twist to the concert, exhibiting their versatility as musicians. In addition, Cyrus H, with his cello, provided a stirring rendition of the Irish traditional tune, Star of the County Down.”

Mr Martin continued: “Barnaby M-J, on the piano, presented Angelfish by Anne Crosby Gaudet, highlighting his talent and musicality. The audience was captivated by his interpretation, which brought out the playful and whimsical nature of the composition. Next up were Kian B and Samar C who, performing as a string duo, delivered a splendid performance of Kathy and David Blackwell’s compositions Down Up, In Flight, and City Lights. Their flawless synchronization and musicality were a testament to their dedication and hard work.”

Wetherby Senior’s showcase concert continued with a number of fantastic piano performances. Mr Martin explained: “Josh K returned to the stage, this time on the piano, and presented a heartfelt rendition of Beethoven’s timeless masterpiece, Fur Elise. Josh’s interpretation showcased his deep understanding of the composition, enveloping the audience in its beauty. Orlando T, also on piano, offered a delightful rendition of The Child That is Born on the Sabbath Day, by Rodney Bennett.

“Our concert also featured piano performances by Ihsan A, who presented Chopin’s Mazurka in G Minor with precision and grace, and Isaac M, who delighted our audience with his playful and lively Mister Trumpet Man, by Gillock. Both pianists demonstrated technical proficiency and a deep understanding of their respective compositions.

“Carter O, with his remarkable voice, then took the stage and delivered a breath-taking performance of Benjamin Britten’s When You’re Feeling Like Expressing Your Affection. His rich vocals captivated our audience, conveying the depth of emotion within the piece, while the flawless execution and nuanced interpretation showcased his vocal range and control, leaving everyone in awe.”

Mr Silvester, Headmaster, said: “Our Wetherby Senior musical showcase was a resounding success, highlighting the immense talent and dedication of our young musicians. Our concert not only showcased their technical proficiency but also their ability to evoke emotions and tell stories through their music. Indeed, our audience was treated to an evening of exceptional performances that left all inspired and uplifted.

“Bravo to all involved – our concert was a testament to the hard work and commitment of our young performers, as well as the guidance and support provided by their music teachers, including Mrs Bottril, Mr Wilsher, Mr Fischer, Mr Repa, Ms Lee, Mr Williams, and Ms Gorbanova. Under the direction of Mr Martin, our Director of Music, this Wetherby Senior concert truly highlighted the importance of music education, and the power of music to bring people together.”
