Leading with LEGO

Wetherby Senior sixth formers have concluded a transformational ethical leadership programme with a fantastic day involving a very familiar toy – LEGO!

Over the last five months, a group from Year 12 have been working with Magnolia Tree, an internationally renowned executive coaching and consulting firm, to develop their ethical leadership skills. During this time, these boys have learned what ethical and value-based leadership looks like, and have been guided towards developing the skills and values that are essential to sustainable leadership. Finally, to mark the end of their epic five-month programme, our sixth formers undertook LEGO Serious Play at our School’s Marylebone Lane home.

Ms Holmes, Head of Careers, explains: “LEGO Serious Play is not simply a Lego play session! It has the capacity to transform leaders in world-renowned businesses, and is a really powerful approach that connects adults with their slightly rusty playful side and imagination.

“Our wonderful facilitator asked our boys to build models that represented how they imagined themselves in a variety of ways. They had to build a model of their leadership style now, a model of how they wanted their leadership style to be in a few years, and a model of how they thought others saw them. This triggered their creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills all at once, resulting in some fantastic discussions. I was so delighted by our boys’ mature answers and amazing work!”

Over the last five months, our sixth formers have enjoyed numerous workshops with Magnolia Tree, which have really brought to life what it means to be an ethical leader and enabled them identify their strengths, build resilience, and examine how to respond to life events.

Ms Holmes added: “Thank you Magnolia Tree, for putting your trust in this group of young men. Wetherby Senior is the first school you have ever partnered with, making our sixth formers the youngest people you have ever worked with. Our sixth formers made me so proud, and it has been an unforgettable five month journey for all of us!”
