Viva Mexico

Wetherby Senior’s young biologists are set to undertake fascinating scientific research, studying sea turtles, jaguars, toucans and more, in Mexico!

In June 2024, our School’s Biology Department will take a group of boys (from our current Years 9 and 11) on an exciting expedition to the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. As well as putting skills learned in the classroom into practice, as boys collect important scientific data that will be used to protect our ecosystems, our pupils will be able to immerse themselves in Mexican culture and cuisine.

Ms Johnson, from Wetherby Senior’s Biology Department, explains: “Our first week will be spent at the beautiful Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, where boys will stay in a rural jungle location. We will spend our days there learning about the jungle, surveying animals like jaguars, bats, birds, spider monkeys and lizards. We will also undertake a visit to the nearby UNESCO Calakmul Ruins, to learn more about the Ancient Mayans.

“Our second week will be based in Akumal, a stunning beach which is famous for enabling you to swim with sea turtles. Our boys will get to snorkel on the seagrass beds, making observations and assessing the impact of tourism on the health of turtles. The data collected by our pupils will be used by researchers on current research projects.”

This trip will be open to pupils currently in Years 9 and 11, and will take place during the final two weeks of Wetherby Senior’s Summer Term 2024. Interested pupils, and their parents, are invited to attend a presentation about this expedition at 6pm, on Wednesday 24th May, in our Marylebone Lane Drama Studio. To confirm interest and register your attendance at this presentation evening, please email Ms Johnson.
