Headmaster’s blog 21/04/2023

Our Summer Term got off to a brisk start, with exams for Year 12, a trip to Kenilworth Castle for our Year 10 historians, and a number of our pupils and staff being involved in production of a new Wetherby Senior film, alongside all our usual lessons and co-curricular activities.

I’m delighted to say that I’ve received very positive feedback about the behaviour, conduct and general enthusiasm of all the boys who took part in our School film, whether this was in lessons at Marylebone, undertaking sports activities at Ealing or simply posing beneath a drone (please see our Instagram account for a sneak preview of that shot). I look forward to sharing the final version of our film in the next few months.

In today’s assemblies, our younger year groups had the pleasure of my voice, but our sixth formers got to hear from some of our alumni, in preparation for their own imminent departure to university. These alumni provided our outgoing Year 13 with some timely advice about their respective university experiences, including tips on making the most of your student days, guidance on accommodation and study techniques, and feedback on their own courses and institutions.

I often talk to prospective families about the strong community that we have at Wetherby Senior, and I feel today’s Sixth Form assembly was a good example of this. While it was fantastic to welcome back our alumni, and hear how their studies at top UK universities are progressing, it was also clear that they were pleased to be back in Marylebone, spending time again at Wetherby Senior, and were very happy to pass on their knowledge to current sixth formers.

In the assemblies that I spoke in, I discussed fasting. As we are at the end of Ramadan, and a number of boys have been fasting for the month and are looking forward to Eid celebrations this weekend, it seemed apposite to reflect a little on their experiences, as well as to consider the wide-ranging historic origins of a practice that is still a part of the lives of many different people, for many different reasons. For those Muslim boys and families celebrating this weekend, I hope that you have an enjoyable weekend and wish you Eid Mubarak!
