An energetic evening

Wetherby Senior’s Geography Scholars heard from a specialist in global energy at Monday’s Royal Geographical Society lecture.

Current Year 12, Alex L, is president of our Geography Scholars. He said: “Centred around the question, ‘Can the world have secure, affordable and equitable energy services that are environmentally benign?’, this talk shed light upon energy security in Europe, and the contentious situation in Russia that is affecting the gas bills, as well as our current standing in the world of climate change.

“Professor Bradshaw, an expert in global energy from the University of Warwick, also offered his insight on what the move to renewable energy would look like for us, and how it has been progressing in recent years. This is a topic that many of the scholars found interesting, as it dealt with how geopolitics may influence our transition to a ‘green world’.

“All in all, this was a thought-provoking talk which gave another detailed perception of the modern world, and its moving pieces.”

Wetherby Senior’s Geography Scholars (boys in Years 11 to 13 who have shown a particularly strong aptitude and keen interest in the subject) aim to attend an RGS lecture each month, helping them extend their knowledge and understanding beyond GCSE and A Level study.

Founded in 1830 to advance geographical sciences, the Royal Geographical Society is the UK’s learned society and professional body for geography. It has around 16,000 members, with its work reaching the public through publications, research groups and lectures.

Wetherby Senior sixth formers have been snapping around London, taking photos of what our capital city means to them.
