All fired up

Wetherby Senior’s youngest pupils were playing with fire, in a safe and scholarly way, at our School’s super Science Club!

Meeting each week, our Science Club enables Years 7 and 8 to explore science further, with a range of fun experiments designed to extend their knowledge and understanding beyond the classroom.

Ms Vanags, from our Science Department, explains: “In our picture, below, you can see Mr Oxley demonstrating a combustion reaction with some of our young scientists. Methane burns in the presence of oxygen (from the air) producing carbon dioxide and water. However, since methane is lighter than air, bubbles filled with it rise. As our brave pupil is demonstrating, once these bubbles light up and are on fire, they are already moving up and off his skin, meaning his hands don’t get burned.

“Water is also a great conductor of heat, it pulls any heat away from your hand for the few seconds that the methane bubbles are on fire, hence the importance ensuring our pupils had thoroughly wet hands before picking up their bubbles! As the flames heat the water on hands, some of the water on the surface evaporates, and this evaporation also creates a natural cooling process.”

Wetherby Senior’s Science Club for Years 7 and 8 takes place every Wednesday, in M22. Interested pupils can find out more by speaking to Ms Vanags or Mr Oxley.

Wetherby Senior sixth formers have been snapping around London, taking photos of what our capital city means to them.
