Shakespearean splendour

Don’t be jealous but Wetherby Senior pupils watched an acclaimed adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello before Christmas.

Our English Department took a number of boys to see the Shakespearean tragedy, at the National Theatre, during the final week of last term. As current Year 11, Zach, said: “It was a brilliant way to spend an afternoon!”

Ms Murray, Head of English at Wetherby Senior, added: “The play was great, and we all enjoyed it. In class, we had read an interview with the director, Clint Dyer, about how he wanted to spotlight the misogyny of the play, as well as the racism. This was clear in the brilliant performances by the two actors playing Desdemona and Emilia.

“During the interval, I spotted a group of our boys getting out their Othello texts – they were up in arms that Iago’s first soliloquy had been removed! We agreed to talk about these decisions by the director during our next lesson in Marylebone.”

Described as “extraordinary” by WhatsOnStage and as “a visceral piece of theatre” by The Times, the National Theatre’s production of Othello stars Giles Terera, Rosy McEwen and Paul Hilton, and runs until the end of January.

Wetherby Senior sixth formers have been snapping around London, taking photos of what our capital city means to them.
