Vive le cinema

Wetherby Senior’s Year 9 linguists have enjoyed a special film screening at one of London’s top independent cinemas.

For last Friday’s Field Day, our pupils spent the afternoon at the Ciné Lumière, within the Institut Francais in South Kensington. Since opening in the 1990s, the Ciné Lumière has established itself as one of London’s best independent cinemas, with a particular emphasis on French, European and world cinema.

Mr Leverage, Head of Modern Foreign Languages at Wetherby Senior, said: “Our pupils started their Field Day in Marylebone, watching a classic film by the renowned Finnish director, Aki Kaurismaki. His work deals with the topic of migration in France in a sensitive and age-appropriate manner.

“After lunch, we then travelled to the Ciné Lumière for a special screening of the film, Fahim. This biographical comedy drama tells the true story of a chess prodigy from Bangladesh, who overcomes tremendous obstacles before representing France in international chess championships.”

Founded in 1910, the Institut Francais comprises a language centre, cinema, multi-media library, children’s library, and a café-restaurant. It welcomes around 200,000 people each year.

Wetherby Senior sixth formers have been snapping around London, taking photos of what our capital city means to them.
