The appliance of science

Wetherby Senior’s young scientists were exploring modern science at two central London venues during last Friday’s Field Day.

Members of Year 11 visited the Wellcome Collection, a museum that looks at health and science, to see two exhibitions – Being Human, which explores what it means to be human in the twenty-first century, and Objects in Stereo, a new exhibition by British photographer Jim Naughten.

Mr Davies, Head of Physics at Wetherby Senior, explained: “The Wellcome Collection’s Being Human exhibition was particularly fascinating for our pupils, as it reflects many of society’s hopes and fears about new forms of medical knowledge, and our changing relationships with ourselves, each other and the world.”

As part of Friday’s Field Day, our Year 11 also headed to the Francis Crick Institute to learn more about the trailblazing scientists who, in the Institute’s cutting-edge labs, are helping to turn the tide on cancer.

Mr Davies added: “Through the Francis Crick Institute’s immersive art-installation and series of extraordinary films, our boys were able to discover the big questions, hopes and challenges that drive these remarkable scientists to try and outsmart this constantly evolving disease.

“Modern science is a collaborative process, so our Field Day introduced our young scientists to exhibitions that were multidisciplinary in nature. In this way, as well as building on knowledge and understanding from our science lessons, our boys could explore topics related to art, literature, philosophy and history.”

Based near Euston, the Wellcome Collection is a free museum and library that aims to challenge how people think and feel about health, while the nearby Francis Crick Institute is a biomedical research centre that opened in 2016.
