Park life

Last Friday’s Field Day saw Wetherby Senior’s Duke of Edinburgh Award participants learning first aid techniques before honing their orienteering skills in Hyde Park.

Year 10 pupil, Daniel A, explains: “In the morning, we took part in valuable first aid training at Hannah House, learning methods like CPR and the Heimlich manoeuvre, as well as deciding what to pack in our expedition kits.

“After a much-needed lunch, we set out in our groups of five to Hyde Park, armed with a map, a compass, and the sight of Winter Wonderland in the distance (where it stayed!). I wish I could say my group started well but, unfortunately, we managed to take a wrong turn, on the first landmark! Luckily, we recovered as our group worked together, using the map and compass to re-calculate our bearings and find our way.

“The first part of our journey was along a lake, which made the trip quite pleasant as we watched the swans, ducks and gulls around the water. When we reached halfway, Mr Smith pointed us onwards and we continued with renewed vigour. We finished our walk within 90 minutes – a fantastic success.

“Overall, our Field Day went really well. It was really interesting to learn more about first aid, as well as getting the chance to practise our map reading skills in beautiful Hyde Park with friends!”

Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award remains popular at Wetherby Senior. This well-respected and challenging programme can be completed at three levels – Bronze, Silver or Gold – and provides an excellent opportunity for our young people to enhance their teamwork, organisation and leadership skills.
