Celebrating St Nikolaus

A group of Wetherby Senior’s Year 9 linguists have been taking part in a sweet German Christmas tradition this week.

On Tuesday, boys studying German left a shoe by their classroom door to see if this would be filled with a treat from St Nikolaus for their good behaviour. As you can see, from the picture below, there were some happy faces and shoes filled with tasty surprises waiting for them after their lesson!

Ms Dolatshahi, Head of German at Wetherby Senior, explains: “St Nikolaus – the figure that Santa Claus is based on – visits German homes between 5th and 6th December to leave a gift in the shoes of good children. However, children who have not behaved well are left coals or stones from his helper, Knecht Ruprecht.”

Taking part in St Nikolaustag celebrations during their German lessons helps our young linguists expand their knowledge of German culture and life, alongside their language skills.

Fröhlichen Nikolaustag!
