Great expectations

Year 9, Benjamin, is one of our new Wetherby Laureates, having displayed commitment and excellence in his English work at Wetherby Senior.

“English is definitely one of my favourite subjects at school. I love how creative you can be – from writing a piece of fiction to producing a factual news article for The Barometer (our pupil-led School magazine).

“When we have discussions in our English class, I find it fascinating to hear how people can respond so differently to the same piece of text or to the same character. Everyone has a different answer, yet each response uncovers something new and meaningful about the work that you are all examining together.

“At the moment, in our English classes, we have been exploring dystopian literature, which I find very interesting. We first studied Animal Farm, which was brilliant, and have now been looking at Fahrenheit 451. This is such an interesting take by the American author, Ray Bradbury, on how the future could be.

“Wetherby Senior’s English Department is fantastic – full of great teachers who are willing to help and support you, in and outside of lessons. Whether encouraging us to take part in national writing competitions (which are a lot of fun!), arranging trips to theatres across London, or introducing a new initiative like Wetherby Laureates, there is always something happening in our English Department!

“I am very happy to be one of our School’s new Wetherby Laureates.”
