Just the job

Ms Holmes is Head of Careers at Wetherby Senior School.

“Before moving into teaching, I trained as a financial analyst and held senior positions in banking and finance, such as S&P Global Ratings’ Managing Director for Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa. After training through the ‘NowTeach’ Programme, and joining Wetherby Senior as a teacher of economics and business, I am excited to be taking on the responsibilities of Head of Careers. This feels a natural step for me as, when working within the financial industry, I always enjoyed mentoring and supporting younger bankers and analysts, helping them develop and move into more senior positions.

“I’m proud that, at Wetherby Senior, we start careers guidance from Year 7, when boys enjoy professional development lessons. I don’t believe many schools begin career preparation this early, so it gives our boys a good grounding and a head start in the competitive world of work. Our careers support increases as boys move through our School. For example, in Years 10 and 11, they undertake a Morrisby psychometric test (a respected and scientifically developed assessment that produces a profile of your abilities, personality type, interests, and preferred work and learning styles). This detailed profile can help with A Level planning, as well as thinking around future career options.”

“As Wetherby Senior’s Head of Careers, one of the new projects that I’m particularly excited about is our work with an executive coaching company. This organisation normally only supports top-level executives, meaning Wetherby Senior will be their first school, and it is a great opportunity for our sixth formers to learn how to be ethical decision makers in business. A group from our Year 12 will meet with this executive coaching company over a number of weekends, working in teams and working independently, as they learn how to be ethical decision makers in business.

“I also support our sixth formers taking part in Young Enterprise each year, with peers from nearby Queen’s College, London. This autumn, our boys were selected following a competitive process, meaning each had to send me a written application and take part in a group meeting to show their dedication and commitment. All got feedback on their application and have now been assigned roles, such as marketing or finance, for their new business. Watch this space (and follow our Careers Instagram page) to find out how successful they are!”
