Our Latin learner

Year 8 pupil, Manu, is doing exceptionally well in Latin at Wetherby Senior, despite not knowing the classical language before joining our School in Year 7.

“I find Wetherby Senior teachers to be very supportive and kind, and this is particularly true of my Latin teacher, Ms Nash. In our Latin lessons, she will introduce a new vocabulary set and then we work together as a class to find clever and funny ways to remember this new set. We also undertake translations from Latin to English and English into Latin, and extension work. I like how Latin lessons at Wetherby Senior are interactive and fun. My friends also enjoy Latin, so it is quite a popular subject at our School.

“Before I had my first Latin lesson at Wetherby Senior, I was worried that I would find it very hard, as I had not learnt Latin before. However, at this point, and in contrast to studying French or Spanish (which I am also doing at Wetherby Senior), you don’t need to worry about your accent, which is a relief! I also learnt that there is not one rule that defines Latin, which makes it really interesting. For example, there are different ways you can translate both the imperfect and perfect tenses!

“To anyone about to start learning Latin at Wetherby Senior, I am sure you will enjoy it! Wetherby Senior’s teachers are great and make sure that you learn while having fun. Latin is a lovely language to study, and you will start to notice references to it in your everyday life, such as in conversations with your parents or when you read something in the news. This is because Latin phrases are still used today (Carpe Diem!) and there are also lots of English derivations from Latin words.

“I would certainly like to continue and take GCSE Latin at Wetherby Senior.”
