Across the universe

Young people at Wetherby Senior enjoyed an out of this world careers talk on Monday, learning about opportunities within the space industry.

This week’s careers lecture was given by Luke Vanstone, who works in the space industry as a business development manager. Having studied tropical disease biology at university, Luke is now passionate about his work within the space industry and about the translation of impactful science into the commercial world.

Ms Holmes, Head of Careers at Wetherby Senior, explains: “Through Luke’s fascinating talk, we learned that there is no part of our life that is not touched by space. For example, following an Uber car approach our location on a map is only made possible via the space industry.

“Our careers lecture was attended by all our Sixth Form physicists, plus other sixth formers and all those currently in Year 11 who are thinking of A Level Physics. However, as Luke explained, there are multiple pathways into the space industry, meaning you don’t even have to be a physicist or even a scientist, depending on your role.”

With 371 companies in London alone, the space industry is now a £16.4bn industry that employs 45,000 people in the UK. For more information on the UK Space Agency, please click here.
