Headmaster’s blog 14/10/22

Our last week before the half-term break began with activities to mark World Mental Health Day and ends with publication of the latest issue of The Barometer.

Alongside lessons and co-curricular activities, other events in Marylebone this week included a busy Visitor Morning for prospective parents before our application deadline today, a wonderful autumn music recital (well done to all in our Music Department), and Year 11 parents’ evenings on Tuesday and Thursday. I also greatly enjoyed our fantastic Trib competition over lunch today – a maths relay involving 70 mathematicians from across all years, with prefects, other boys, Heads of Tribs, and our Maths Department there to cheer them on!

On Monday, an outside speaker talked to our sixth formers about good mental health practices, and I continue to be delighted by the variety of inspiring and informative lectures or talks that our boys enjoy regularly. Looking back at this week, as well as World Mental Health Day, our School then hosted a History Symposium with Queen’s College, London, meaning our Year 13 historians heard from two professors of history at London universities. The week before, a group of boys from Years 11 to 13 headed to Frances Holland, Regent’s Park, for a lecture by Lady Brenda Hale on her life and career, outlining how she went from a North Yorkshire village to President of the UK’s Supreme Court. In addition, all in Years 7 and 9 enjoyed a talk that Friday by online safety expert Karl Hopwood in Marylebone. He will be returning in early 2023 to talk further on this topic to all Wetherby Senior parents, from all year groups, and we’ll circulate more details nearer the time.

In addition, our first day back after half-term will conclude with a talk on careers in the space industry, with a representative from the UK Space Agency, for interested pupils in Years 10-13. Further details are in our newsletter to current parents, under Sixth Form News. Please note that this talk is compulsory for any Year 11 thinking of studying A Level Physics and for all our Sixth Form physicists.

A quick reminder to Year 10 parents, who will also have received a letter about this, that your son is now able to complete his Morrisby psychometric test. The Morrisby psychometric test is a respected and scientifically developed assessment that will produce a profile of your son’s abilities, personality type, interests, and preferred work and learning styles, which can help with A Level planning and thoughts around future careers.

As I said earlier, the latest issue of The Barometer is out today, so I hope you enjoy reading this over the half-term break. Have a relaxing and pleasant holiday, and we expect to see boys back in Marylebone on Monday 31st October.

Wetherby Senior sixth formers have been snapping around London, taking photos of what our capital city means to them.
