A Spanish success story

Ms Miguez is Head of Spanish at Wetherby Senior.

“I joined Wetherby Senior in 2018 and it has been fantastic to see interest in Spanish grow during in my time in Marylebone. Our pupils start Spanish in Year 7, and it is also available as a GCSE and an A Level option. With over 500 million speakers worldwide, Spanish is an incredibly useful language that offers fantastic study and career opportunities, so I am delighted that numbers choosing A Level Spanish within our Sixth Form continue to increase.

“As a native Spanish speaker, what I most enjoy about teaching at Wetherby Senior is how dynamic our lessons are, as we build knowledge and learning so our boys can have real conversations in Spanish. We are also fortunate to have a fantastic MFL Assistant (also a native Spanish speaker) to offer additional support, taking small groups of pupils to a separate classroom where they follow the same content as the lesson but with an even greater focus on speaking.

“I am determined that our boys learn more about Spanish culture and way of life, so they can understand how this may differ to their own culture and way of life. This means that I sometimes cook tortilla for our pupils, that we listen to music or play interactive games in class, and that we have discussions about Spanish festivals and events.

“In addition, I am very keen for our boys to take their learning beyond the classroom. We make the most of our School’s location in central London by going to see Spanish language plays and I will be running Spanish trips again soon.

“I love the enthusiasm and energy with which our boys approach Spanish at Wetherby Senior and I am very happy in my role as our School’s Head of Spanish. Gracias!”
