Our super swimmer

Year 8 pupil, Marty, is a successful swimmer, training multiple times a week and taking part in national competitions.

“I first joined a local swimming club when I was just 7 or 8 years old and, although I wasn’t initially enthusiastic, my mother encouraged me to stick it out for a few months. I’m glad she did, as I’m now a very keen swimmer!

“I currently train six times a week and have taken part in a number of competitions. In fact, just recently, I swam at the National Arena Junior Swimming league final in Coventry. My team qualified as one of the top eight in the country and finished second in the national rankings – the highest we have ever reached. In addition, for the second year running, I won the best male swimmer award for my age category!

“Wetherby Senior have been very supportive of my swimming career, ensuring I can keep up my training and keep on top of my schoolwork. Since my swimming training schedule is intense, with three morning sessions (two on school days and one at the weekend) and three evening sessions (including a double session on Thursday), our Sport Department agreed that I could be off-games on Mondays and Fridays, meaning I use that time to focus on my academic studies.

“I’m also proud to be part of Wetherby Senior’s Aspiring Athlete Programme. This means I have one-to-one workout sessions with the highly qualified staff from our Sport Department, helping me to keep up my fitness and reduce my risk of injury.

“I often write about my experiences at swimming competitions for our School’s newspaper, The Barometer, which I hope other pupils enjoy reading. I intend to continue my swimming and hope to have even more success in the future.”
