Our Year 12 geographers travelled south on Friday, to undertake important A Level fieldwork in Brixton.
Home to the famous Brixton Market, this multicultural area of London has undergone a process of gentrification since the 1990s, creating a thriving bohemian art scene. While this has been welcomed by many for bringing exciting regeneration to Brixton, there have been complaints that the council has not engaged with local residents, which has led to campaigns by Brixton residents and activists against gentrification.
However, for our Year 12 geographers, this all means that Brixton provides the ideal location to study the impacts of gentrification on place identity in preparation for their human geography exam.
Ms Smith, Head of Geography, accompanied our sixth formers and said: “As part of what turned out to be a sunny day in Brixton, our boys developed a mini-investigation and conducted fieldwork in preparation for their non-exam assessment element of their A Level specification. It was a very worthwhile trip and greatly enjoyed by all our Year 12 geographers.”
For our A Level Geography class, this exploration of Brixton follows another successful field trip last month, to Whitstable in Kent.
