Headmaster’s blog 4/3/22

As we move into March, it has been another busy week at Wetherby Senior, with a cycling challenge and love for literature taking place alongside our usual lessons and co-curricular activities.

I’d like to begin by thanking all involved in our first Wetherby Senior School Sponsored Spin on Wednesday – from the logistics of organising a 12-hour cycling competition to pedalling your part of the River Thames to sponsoring our young cyclists! This terrific Trib event has seen our boys collecting more than £3,000 (and counting) towards three very deserving charities. We will share further details about the money raised in next week’s newsletter but donations can still be made online here.

Cycling has not been our only sporting activity this week, with five football matches taking place against other London schools. All teams represented Wetherby Senior well but there was special praise from our Sport Department for our Under 15 A team, who beat Emanuel School 2-0 yesterday. Next week we have six fixtures – football and rugby – taking place and it is fantastic to see such an enthusiastic return to sport after the previous disruption caused by the pandemic.

I must also extend thanks to our English Department and our School Librarian for our World Book Day events this week, which have included co-ordinating a book swap amongst pupils, providing a book donation opportunity for all within our School community to support the London Book Project, and arranging a fascinating talk by the author, Tom Pollock. More details are in this week’s newsletter and I’m delighted to see how our School continues to nurture and develop a love for reading across all year groups.

This week’s London Underground strikes caused disruption to travel into Marylebone and also meant we had postpone yesterday’s UK university talk for sixth formers and parents. This will now take place next Thursday and further details about it, plus other activities to support the ambitions of our young people, are to be found in our weekly newsletter.

Wetherby Senior sixth formers have been snapping around London, taking photos of what our capital city means to them.
