A grand game

Check out the recent chess success of one Wetherby Senior pupil!

Before the half-term holiday, Sebastian took part in the Kensington Rapidplay Chess Tournament. Our Year 9 pupil scored 4/6 including a win against an International Master, and a draw with English Chess Grandmaster, Stewart Conquest.

Sebastian explained: “At the tournament, we had just 20 minutes per match and I took part in six matches that day. I was really pleased to draw against a Grandmaster like Stewart Conquest and I’m now looking forward to taking part in even more chess tournaments this year.

“I’ve been playing chess since I was just six years old, after my grandmother first taught me. Wetherby Senior’s Chess Club, which meets each week, is great and I’d really recommend it to other pupils.”

As part of Wetherby Senior’s Chess Club, Sebastian can take part in the qualifying event for the English Schools Chess Championships on Friday 17th November. Any other pupils interested in taking part in this event, or in joining our School’s Chess Club, should contact Mr Brennan.
