The camera loves London

Wetherby Senior sixth formers have been snapping around London, taking photos of what our capital city means to them.

This term, two groups from Year 12 have been learning more about photography as part of their liberal studies classes. As they reached the end of this programme, they were set an exciting photography challenge by their teacher.

Ms Leahey, from our Geography Department, explains: “Our sixth formers were asked to capture an image that they could entitle Iconic London. They were also required to write a short blurb to explain the photography techniques used, as well as why they felt that their photo represented the Iconic London title.

“Four brave sixth formers submitted photos, which were voted on by pupils and staff from across our School. Congratulations to our winner, Matteo!”

Matteo’s winning picture is below. He said: “One of the most iconic parts of London is our Underground, where we have all suffered the wrath of the strikes and the tediously long rush hours. A key thing I wished to capture was the Underground sign, whilst having various means of transport in the background to demonstrate the rush hour on a typical Friday night.

“While taking this photo, I used the rule of thirds to split the image into nine sections. This proved to be an effective method as the London Underground sign is in the top left section and, as a result, is the centre of attention of the image.”

Wetherby Senior’s Liberal Studies options help our sixth formers extend their learning beyond the A Level curriculum, building valuable skills and knowledge for future study and the workplace. Our Liberal Studies classes, which change each term, mean our boys can explore subjects linked to a university course that interests them or examine topics linked to their A Level studies and life in our Sixth Form.
