Sweet seventy

Seventy Wetherby Senior pupils have taken part in a prestigious national mathematics competition.

Each year, young mathematicians from across the country compete in the UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Senior Mathematics Challenge. Although primarily aimed at pupils in Years 12 and 13, Wetherby Senior’s participants included a select number of Year 11 boys, as well as sixth formers.

Both A Level Maths and A Level Further Maths are popular options within Wetherby Senior’s Sixth Form. Mr Searle, Head of Mathematics at Wetherby Senior, explains: “On Tuesday morning, our boys took on the UKMT’s challenging 90-minute paper which tested their problem solving skills. Our boys had to manage their time carefully and make judgement calls on whether answer all questions and risk losing marks for incorrect answers.

“We look forward to receiving the results in a few weeks and hope that many of our strongest pupils will qualify for the further rounds and compete nationally once again.”

For over 20 years the UK Maths Trust has been advancing the education of young people in maths and working to inspire a love of problem solving through maths challenges and enrichment activities.
