A geographical gem

Wetherby Senior’s geographers have been exploring the UK’s second largest Channel Island, undertaking fascinating fieldwork in Guernsey.

Last week, members of our Year 12 headed to Guernsey as part of their A Level studies. During this visit, our sixth formers researched the characteristics of the island, looking at data such as demographics around St Peter’s Port and building beach profiles.

Reflecting on this expedition, current Year 12, Alex, said: “In order to get the data required, our groups had to try all sorts of techniques, including undertaking questionnaires and interviews with locals to measuring the sizes of rocks along different beaches!

“Alongside this research work, our trip was packed with activities, including beach football, swimming, boat trips and more, making good use of the great weather in Guernsey! We returned to Marylebone full of data and information to practice for the Non Examined Assessment (NEA) part of our A Level Geography, which makes up a percentage of our final grade.”

Ms Maroudi, Head of Geography at Wetherby Senior, added: “This was our first Wetherby Senior trip to Guernsey and I would highly recommend the island as a fieldwork destination. As well as great research opportunities, it also provided also excellent facilities and welcoming people.”

The second largest Channel Island, Guernsey is around 27 miles west of France and boasts a coastline of relaxing beaches, with stretches of diverse landscapes inland.
