Here Comes the ISA Awards

Congratulations to two Wetherby Senior pupils, both highly commended for their fab submissions in the prestigious ISA Essay Competition 2023.

Within the arts and humanities group for the Sixth Form category, Frankie (currently in Year 12 at Wetherby Senior) was highly commended for his essay: Yesterday, Today and The Beatles: How History’s Most Successful Band Revolutionised Musical Culture.

Frankie explains: “I decided to write about the Beatles because I’ve always had a passion for music and the Beatles are my favourite band. I’ve never entered a competition like this before, yet Mrs Deedat encouraged me to take part and Ms Mendes kindly read my final piece of work, before I submitted it. Of course, my family were delighted when I told them my good news!”

For Wetherby Senior, success in the ISA Essay Competition 2023 is here, there and everywhere, since Year 8 pupil, Frederick, has also been highly commended this year. Frederick entered the Max Gate category for pupils in Years 7 and 8, so he had to select a title, from five to six on offer, to write about.

Frederick said: “I chose the title, The Wrong Answer, and wrote about someone starting a new school but with a dark twist. I started my work just before our February half-term and spent about three to four weeks writing it. My family were so impressed when I told them about this award!

“At Wetherby Senior, my English teacher is Mr Hayes. He has been a great teacher and really inspired me to work hard on this entry for the ISA.”

Reflecting on entries for the Max Gate category, ISA judges said: “It was both a pleasure and a privilege to read the submissions.”

The ISA Essay Competition is an annual opportunity for pupils, from Years 5 to 13at ISA members’ schools, to showcase their writing skills.
