Home is where the art is

Wetherby Senior’s Year 7 certainly made themselves at home this week, starting an exciting new project inspired by a British artist.

Our youngest pupils are currently exploring the work of illustrator and ceramicist, Scott Garrett, with a particular focus on his series, Nobody’s Home. Garrett produced his fascinating paintings of flattened structures after seeing abandoned roadside buildings and ghost towns when travelling across the USA, with further inspiration provided by any ramshackle fishermen huts near his south coast England home.

Making good use of one of our Marylebone Lane art studios, Wetherby Senior’s Year 7 boys got into pairs and undertook experimental printmaking in this week’s class. As well as building their teamwork skills, this activity enabled our pupils to test out different textures and examine complimentary colour combinations through their own work, as well as express themselves creatively.

Ms Bradley, Director of Art at Wetherby Senior, explained: “Our experimental printmaking activity ensured our boys got a first-hand experience of different printing techniques, plus a chance to reflect upon and try out different textures and colours.

“Once their artworks are dry, our pupils will use them to create their own collages of a cabin, all inspired by the wonderful work of Scott Garrett. In this way, they will build their understanding of how colour and texture can create a design, while expressing themselves and getting their imagination working with their own collage. It is a fantastic opportunity for our boys to be investigative and creative with their art, and all e thoroughly enjoyed making the most of our School’s art studios.”

Kian and Kaspian, who were working together, echoed Ms Bradley’s words. Both agreed it was one of the best art lessons they had undertaken, so far, at Wetherby Senior!

We look forward to seeing Year 7’s finished collages.
