History in the making

Wetherby Senior’s A Level historians have taken part in our School’s inaugural History Symposium.

Just before half-term, our School’s joint event with peers from Queen’s College, London, took place at our Marylebone Lane site. All sixth formers presented papers on topics of their choosing, which related to the theme, ‘The history of London.’

Ms Mendes, Deputy to Head of Wetherby Senior’s Sixth Form and a teacher of history and politics, explained: “Presentations took our audience from Londinium all the way to the Notting Hill race riots, and looked at the influence of the eastern European diaspora on London football teams.”

Alongside this, sixth formers heard from Mr Crichlow, a PhD History student at UCL, and from Professor Poleg of Queen Mary, University of London. Mr Crichlow talked about the legacy of slaveowners on London, with a focus on the streets around Marylebone Lane, while Professor Poleg spoke about medieval London and where to find signs of it, including looking for evidence of the Walbrook and Fleet rivers in the city.

Ms Mendes added: “Congratulations to Zachary for his lecture on Viking London, which won ‘Best Presentation’. However, all our historians acquitted themselves perfectly, spoke with confidence on their chosen subject, and enjoyed the experience of discussing historical topics beyond the curriculum.”
