Wetherby Senior’s Year 10 geographers rocked up in Brighton this week, to examine efforts to protect the city’s iconic beach.
Braving the sunshine, sea and sunbathers, our pupils undertook physical geography fieldwork in the popular seaside town. They looked at engineering work to preserve Brighton’s famous shingle beach, which meant measuring the groynes placed there in an attempt to reduce longshore drift and trap sediments.
Geography teacher, Ms Maroudi, accompanied our boys. She said: “Our day in Brighton provided a real-world opportunity for our Year 10 geographers to develop and extend their geographical thinking, gaining hand-on practical experience.
“Being able to explore a new location and collect primary data that provides answers to their questions, was a fantastic experience for all our Year 10 geographers. I am delighted that we were able to spend such a productive (and sunny) day in Brighton.”
Brighton’s 5.4 mile shingle beach remains at risk of erosion due to a combination of long-term climate change predictions and rises in sea levels, with work underway by the local councils to prevent such erosion.
