Set to study Stateside

Robert has an offer to read Environmental Sciences and Sociology at University of Notre Dame in Indiana. He lives in Wandsworth and is studying A Levels in Biology, Maths and Philosophy within Wetherby Senior’s Sixth Form.

“I chose to study two majors at Notre Dame – Environmental Sciences and Sociology – because, since my childhood, the natural world and how we interact with it has captivated me. Helping to strike the right balance between human development and conservation, therefore protecting the environment and the communities dependent on it, has become my life’s ambition. I know that Notre Dame has unparalleled resources to help me acquire an in-depth knowledge of the environmental and social forces that will determine how we can best address the challenges facing us. In addition, Notre Dame’s focus on service and care for humanity, plus the close-knit community means that it offers me the ideal setting in which to a positive impact on others.

“Wetherby Senior has fully supported all my university ambitions. In Year 12, each week, there was a lesson dedicated on applying to the United States, where an expert explained how we should approach writing our common application essay and our supplemental essays. I was also able to send this advisor my supplemental essays, before I submitted them, in order to get further feedback.

“Looking back on my time at Wetherby Senior School, the best aspect of my life here has been the community and the high standard of teaching. People are generally very thoughtful, while teachers make it possible for you to master a subject if you work hard.

“Beyond the classroom, I very much enjoyed the many theatre trips organised by our Drama Department – my favourites were The Lehmen Trilogy and The Encounter. I also liked taking part in barbell club, as it helped me clear my head before the school day.”

University of Notre Dame in Indiana has been recognised as one of the US’s top universities, ranked eleventh for best undergraduate teaching in the US by the US News and World Report’s Best Colleges Report (2019). Alumni include state governors, Congress members, and former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, plus the winner of the 1995 Nobel Prize in medicine.

Wetherby Senior’s current Year 13 presently hold over 120 offers, across 35 subjects, at universities around the UK and in North America, France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. We’ve been interviewing many of our successful sixth formers to acknowledge their hard work and commitment, and to further inspire to our younger pupils.
