Young people at Wetherby Senior have taken part in a number of events marking Anti-Racism Month this March.
Organised by our School’s Diversity Committee, activities included pupil-led workshops to encourage more open discussions around race, plus a screening of the Oscar-nominated film Get Out to Years 10 and above.
Miss Nash, Assistant Head of Lower School, said: “Sixth Form members of our Diversity Committee (Ben, Ahmed and Matteo) delivered a well-researched session on the Black Lives Matters protests. This generated interesting debate around assumptions about the protests and gave our young people a broader understanding of the background to these protests.
“In addition, three pupils from Years 9 and 10 (Zain, Tobi and Abe) chaired an open forum on issues such as racial humour. It was fantastic to hear boys from across different year groups speaking so honestly and maturely about such sensitive topics.”
Alongside these successful activities, Miss Nash was pleased to see that the film screening of Get Out was well-attended. She added: “Get Out was chosen as it gives the audience an insight into what it means to be a person of colour in America, showing the microaggressions they can encounter.”
Our School’s Diversity Committee hopes to arrange more film screenings in the future.
