Wetherby Senior sixth formers have been transported back to the Second World War, at the award-winning Churchill War Rooms.
Earlier this week, our Year 12 historians visited the underground bunker and base for the British government operations during the Second World War. At Westminster’s Churchill War Rooms, our boys got to see what it would have been like there as one of Britain’s leaders, working hard to plot the allied route to victory.
Ms Neilson, Head of History, accompanied our sixth formers. She said: “We enjoyed a private tour of the Cabinet War Room, Map Room and Churchill’s office and bedroom – our young people were able to imagine and empathise with Churchill, stuck in a confined and stuffy underground war room, while making important decisions on the operation and direction of the war. The Map Room must have been a hub of activity during the war!
“The archives that remain, such as the record of the British and Allied fleets that were destroyed and the impact of the Enigma code breaker on the fortunes of the fleet, draw the attention of James S. He was delighted to get an informative explanation from our guide.”
Ms Neilson and her A Level History class also had the opportunity to explore the museum and listen to the recorded voices of people who worked there during the war.
The Churchill War Rooms is a branch of the Imperial War Museum and remains one of London’s most popular tourist attractions.
