A hive of spelling success

One Wetherby Senior pupil was buzzy last term, at the Foreign Language Spelling Bee Final.

Benito, then in Year 7, had performed brilliantly in the regional final of this national competition, before the Easter holiday. This meant, before the summer holiday, that he was invited to participate in the finals in Cambridge.

Benito explains: “I entered the Lady Mitchell Hall, the main conference room in Cambridge’s Faculty of Modern Languages, which would soon hold 100 competitors from schools from all over the country! We then found out that there were 57 competitors for German and I had to go first, which is more nerve racking than you think!

“The event was really fun, you didn’t know how the others would do, and I loved watching the other contestants spit spellings out like rapid machine guns firing, all at once. Unfortunately I didn’t make it to the last round, but I was very happy for the competitors that did.”

Mr Leverage, Head of MFL at Wetherby Senior, said: “Gut gemacht, Benito! And thank you to Ms Payton, who brilliantly prepared Benito for participation in this event over two terms, and to Ms Dolatshahi, who accompanied him to Cambridge for the competition.”

Each year, Wetherby Senior pupils participate in the MFL Spelling Bee, which is a fun national event and fantastic way to encourage vocabulary learning amongst school children from across the UK.
