See you in court

Wetherby Senior sixth formers visited the Supreme Court and Europe House last week, to expand understanding of topics related to politics, law, and history.

For Wednesday’s Field Day, members of Year 12 met at the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, before having a guided tour and visiting the exhibition there.

Ms Neilson, Head of History and Politics at Wetherby Senior, explained: “Our picture, below, is in Court 1 of the Supreme Court, where our sixth formers got to perform a mock case on the murder of a member of the public caught in the cross fire of a gang fight. Our boys confidently rose to the occasion, got into character, and were fully engaged in working out their side of the case.”

After lunch, our sixth formers headed to Europe House, where they took part in two fascinating workshops. The first  covered the history of the EU, including key developments since 1950, the key institutions involved in the EU, and how these key institutions come together to make laws. The second workshop looked at EU values and EU diversity, and involved a series of ‘mini-debates’ on various hot-topics.

Ms Neilson added: “As part of their A Level studies, and to support their wider knowledge, it is important that our young people understand the UK’s new relationship with the EU, as well as the role of the Supreme Court and its constitutional role in interpreting laws, especially after leaving the European Union.”

The Supreme Court is the final court of appeal in the UK for civil cases, and for criminal cases from England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It hears cases of the greatest public or constitutional importance affecting the whole population.
