All roads lead to Roman London

Our pupils started at the British Museum, where they viewed famous Classical artefacts, like the Parthenon marbles, before completing a number of fun challenges, such as locating objects like Theseus’ kylix and taking a selfie with it!

After lunch in the sun at Bloomsbury Square, Year 8 made their way to the City of London for a short walking tour. Ms Nash, Head of Classics at Wetherby Senior, explained: “We looked at buildings, like the Royal Exchange, and considered how they have been influenced by Classical architecture. We also visited St Alphage Garden to view a section of the London Wall, which was a defensive wall first built by the Romans in around 200AD.

“Our day ended at London’s Roman Amphitheatre, located in the Guildhall Art Gallery. Our boys enjoyed imagining the gladiator fights that, centuries ago, would have taken place here.”

Wetherby Senior’s Classic Department provides pupils with a broad understanding of the culture and history of the Classical world, plus a chance to gain a solid foundation in Latin. Within our Lower School curriculum, a key aim is that pupils understand the impact of the Classical world on modern society, with this Field Day trip helping boys to take this learning beyond the classroom.
