Busy with science

British Science Week 2023 has been marked by a flurry of experiments and activities at Wetherby Senior.

Organised via our Science Department, events during the last week have ranged from pupils building barometers (to analyse air pressure changes during the day) to pupils building gliders (which they then tested to see which worked best). These varied and exciting opportunities have ensured boys took their learning beyond the curriculum in biology, chemistry, and physics.

In addition, on Wednesday, Year 7 pupils were joined by a group of Year 5 boys from Hill House School, who visited Marylebone to enjoy number of activities to mark British Science Week 2023. This enabled the younger boys to make use of Wetherby Senior’s state-of-the-art science laboratories, whilst giving our current pupils a chance to build their leadership and communication skills, as they worked with younger peers.

Ms Ataii, Head of Science at Wetherby Senior, explains: “Our Year 7 pupils supported these younger boys with a number of different experiments, including a yeast formation exercise where they tested how much CO2 was produced, under different temperatures, by the yeast.”

Ms Westphal, one of Wetherby Senior’s super Science Technicians, added: “Throughout British Science Week, all at Wetherby Senior really enjoyed taking part in these different activities. However, during the Hill House School visit on Wednesday, you could see that our Year 7 pupils were also really proud to be able to support and guide the learning of the younger boys.”

British Science Week is an annual celebration of science, technology, engineering, and maths, run by the British Science Association.
