Concerts and computers

Wetherby Senior’s Year 9 musicians have toured a famous London concert hall, before enjoying retro computer games at the Science Museum.

As part of last Friday’s Field Day, our pupils explored the Royal Albert Hall, learning about the history of the 150-year-old concert venue with an extensive tour that included seeing inside the Royal Box and the Royal Lounge.

Mr Martin, Director of Music, said: “While the list of talented musicians who have played at the Royal Albert Hall is too long to outline here, our boys heard about legendary performances by the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Jay-Z, Adele, and Edward Elgar, as well as about how the world-famous BBC Proms was founded by Sir Henry Wood in 1895.

“We were lucky to visit when Joe Bonamassa’ s stage was set up, which looked fantastic. We also climbed the stairs to the very top of the Royal Albert Hall, where we had a jaw dropping view!”

After their Royal Albert Hall tour, our Year 9 group walked to the nearby Science Museum. Here, our pupils took part in ta new interactive display, Power UP!, which celebrates the last 40 years of computer gaming

Mr Martin added: “This hands-on event included all the games that I enjoyed during my childhood, although some were not quite as good as I remembered! Our boys were able to play with the likes of Amiga, Commodore, NES, SNES, PS1 and PS2, then move on to more recent consoles. It was really interesting to see how gaming industry, particularly the graphics and the music, have changed over the past decades.”

Due to popular demand, the Science Museum’s Power UP! exhibition is now running until early June, with tickets available online.
