Northern negotiations

Wetherby Senior pupils headed to Manchester before half-term, to take part in their first Model United Nations conference.

Taking place at Manchester High School for Girls, the Model UN conference involved over 150 young people from across the UK, representing 16 different schools.

Ms Smith, from our Geography Department, accompanied our pupils. She said: “Our team involved six boys from Years 11 and 12, who were representing Nigeria on a range of committees. Despite being their first conference, our boys did exceptionally well, quickly getting used to the rules and routines. All thoroughly enjoyed taking part in our first live Model UN event”

While Ms Smith was impressed by all members of our Wetherby Senior team, she had additional praise for Zachary, in Year 12, adding: “Zach did particularly well in the Future committee, winning the commended prize for best delegate.”

Model UN is an educational simulation in which young people learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations, while building valuable skills like research, public speaking, debating, and writing. At a Model UN conference, such as this Manchester event, participants work as the representative of a country, organisation or person to solve a problem with other delegates from around the world

For our Wetherby Senior’s Model UN team, the next Model UN conference will be at St Paul’s School in June.
