A number of Wetherby Senior’s sixth formers have completed the first 3,000 words of the draft essay for their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

Well-respected by universities and employers, the EPQ enables young people to independently explore a topic of their choosing and write an essay of around 5,000 words. This means our sixth formers have produced over half of their required work, with topics ranging from cryptocurrency to space travel and from social medic accountability to the benefits of the proposed European Super League.

Current Year 12, Elias, explained the reasons behind his EPQ topic: “Two of my A Levels are Economics and Business, and I’m hoping to study business and finance at university, so my EPQ is: ‘What was the primary cause of the 2008 Financial Crisis’. So far, after writing the first 3,000 words, my EPQ has helped my overall knowledge of finance and international economies, and helped with my other A Levels, through the essay writing and research that I have undertaken.”

Henry added: “I chose to write about the European Super League as I have a lot of passion and knowledge about football. I would recommend the EPQ to younger pupils as it different to my other A Level subjects and provides a nice balance.”

Joshua agreed with Henry: “I would recommend EPQ to younger students because you have a lot of freedom and can write about what you want. My EPQ title is: ‘Is space travel viable?’ and I chose this because I am interested in space and space companies like Space X and Blue Origin.”

Abbas, who is exploring how gaming affects society, described his EPQ experience as rewarding and enjoyable, saying: “You are researching one of your interests and it is a nice change of pace from your other lessons. I also believe it is great practice for future study, as the style of writing is how you’ll write at university.”

As well as being full of praise about the EPQ experience, our sixth formers acknowledged the support given by our Sixth Form. Druan, who is researching social media and the law, said: “Having a minimum of five private studies each week has helped me complete this initial target of 3,000 words and allowed me to keep on top of my other subjects.”
