senior school curriculum

As well as offering the full range of traditional academic and creative subjects here at Wetherby, we have also embedded Philosophy and Learning Skills as part of the core curriculum for all boys up to the age of 16.  Through nurturing a genuine enjoyment of learning, intellectual curiosity and academic excellence we aim to develop our pupils into confident and independent learners. Learning how to think and to study are essential to this aim.

Another unique feature of what we offer the boys here is the supervised prep sessions which are built into the school day for years 7 to 11, providing a quiet and focused environment for all pupils to get on with their work. From years 7 to 9, this means that in the week all written preps are done in school, with just the daily reading task to be done at home. Further preps will be set in core subjects for completion over the weekend. Of course, as boys progress up the school and begin GCSE courses so the amount of prep increases and there is work to be done both in the prep sessions and at home. By the time they begin their A levels, we hope that this approach to working will mean that all of our pupils are able to organise and manage their own workloads independently and effectively.

the school day

This model offers a broadly uniform structure to the school day throughout the week with seven periods (five of forty five and two of forty minutes).  In addition there is a tutor period of thirty minutes on three days.  On two or three afternoons there is an hour-long study period for pupils to complete homework tasks followed by timetabled activities.  There is a mid-morning break of fifteen minutes and a lunch break of fifty five minutes (which would allow time for some association and further activities).  Games is timetabled into an afternoon slot and an additional three period slot during the week is allocated for PE.  Assembly is held on Friday afternoon, after which the teaching week finishes.  The remaining time on a Friday is used for departmental administration and INSET.
