The Scottish studies

Maxime has an offer to read Geography at the University of Edinburgh. He lives in Kensington and is studying A Levels in Chemistry, Geography and Maths within Wetherby Senior’s Sixth Form.

“I applied to read Geography at Edinburgh because it is a highly topical subject, as well as a chance for me to look at a science that interests me and understand how humanity interacts with it. I am keen to study at Edinburgh as it is an electric city with a great student life and because work prospects, upon graduation, are also extremely good.

“Wetherby Senior’s Sixth Form team helped me refine my personal statement and gave me personalised support with my university applications. Once I was offered an interview, staff also scheduled mock interviews for me with other schools, so I could get as much practise as possible. All of this helped ensure I felt confident and supported during what could otherwise be a stressful process.

“Wetherby Senior School is a small community, and this is something that I have relished during my time here – being part of a tight-knit year group and with teachers who are proactive and passionate, making learning engaging and enjoyable. I have particularly enjoyed the extra freedom that has come with my A Level study. Staff set prep well in advance, so I have had a lot of control over how I spend my days. I have also enjoyed how A Level lessons have become more discussion-based, and we are all very involved in the classroom.

“In addition, I have been very happy with the co-curricular activities offered at Wetherby Senior School, with opportunities with our Music and Drama Departments being a personal highlight. For example, the experience of doing the set and lighting for our play of Frankenstein, creating an indoor storm for us to sit beneath, was truly incredible.

“After university, I look forward to using the knowledge that I have gained to enter the world of work. While I am currently thinking of on working in environmental, social and governance consulting, I appreciate that the future is far from set. I am keen to use my time at university to discover more about myself as a person, and as an academic, and see where my degree takes me.”

The University of Edinburgh was rated fourth in the last Research Excellence Framework and, in the 2022 Complete University Guide, saw over 30 of its subjects ranked in the UK top ten. Alumni include major figures in modern history, plus heads of state and government (including three British prime ministers), three Supreme Court Justices of the UK, Olympic gold medallists, 19 Nobel laureates, three Turing Award winners, two Pulitzer Prize winners, and a Fields Medalist.

Wetherby Senior’s current Year 13 presently hold over 120 offers, across 35 subjects, at universities around the UK and in North America, France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. We’ve been interviewing many of our successful sixth formers to acknowledge their hard work and commitment, and to further inspire to our younger pupils.
