A festa for Field Day

Wetherby Senior pupils were learning about Spanish festivals, at a Spanish language and culture centre in the heart of London, last Friday.

For our School’s Field Day, a number of Year 9 pupils visited the Instituto Cervantes, a non-profit organisation founded by the Spanish government over 30 years ago. Our young people took part in two different activities at the institute, covering topics that will be feature in their IGCSE Spanish course, while being further exposed to the Spanish language.

Mr Leverage, Head of Modern Foreign Languages, said: “Our pupils enjoyed a 90-minute cultural lesson about the diversity of the most traditional Spanish festivals. As well as being a fascinating subject by itself, our boys will study this further in Years 10 and 11, while undertaking their IGCSE Spanish.

“Our pupils also got to watch the Spanish movie, Campeones. On its release, this comedy-drama became the highest-grossing Spanish language film in Spain, and received a number of award nominations.”

Named after Miguel de Cervantes, the author of Don Quixote, the Cervantes Institute is the largest organisation in the world responsible for promoting the study and the teaching of Spanish language and culture. It now has 88 centres in more than 40 countries across the globe.

Wetherby Senior sixth formers have been snapping around London, taking photos of what our capital city means to them.
