Half of Wetherby Senior’s Year 9 were suspended in an orange pod, above working scientific research laboratories, at last Friday’s Field Day.
Before health and safety concerns are raised, our Year 9 were learning about cell research at the Centre of the Cell in Whitechapel. Part of Queen Mary, University of London, Centre of the Cell is the world’s first science education centre to be located within working biomedical research labs.
Mr Pimlott, Head of Science at Wetherby Senior, explained: “We took half our Year 9 cohort to the Centre of the Cell, to take part in interactive science experiments. This helped our boys discover more about cell biology and the research happening in the labs below, since many of the games were based on work by Queen Mary’s world-leading scientists.”
“Centre of the Cell’s distinctive orange pod hangs above the working labs of the Blizard Institute in Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, so our pupils could see research scientists at work from the pod. We’re very grateful to Centre of the Cell for providing such a fantastic opportunity for our Year 9 to learn more about about the amazing world of cells and the latest medical research.”
After their morning at Centre of the Cell, our pupils undertook a walking tour of east London to enjoy some local street art.
