An inspiring insight

Last week’s university visit, plus a university fair, have helped Wetherby Senior’s sixth formers learn more about higher education options in a fun and informative way.

As part of Friday’s Field Day, a number of our current Year 12 spent time at St Mary’s University in Twickenham. Regardless of whether our sixth formers were considering this institution for future study or not, this provided a valuable opportunity to see a campus university, receive advice on degrees, and speak to current undergraduates about university life.

Ms Mendes da Costa, Assistant Head of Sixth Form, accompanied our boys. She explains: “We’re very grateful to St Mary’s University for providing such an informative and inspiring experience. On our tour of the campus, we got to see the library, Students’ Union, sports facilities and lecture halls, and it was fantastic to get the feel for life at a campus-based university. Our tour guides, from St Mary’s, did a great job.

“Afterwards, our sixth formers reflected sensibly on whether the institution was how they expected it to be, with the general consensus being that it was smaller than they had thought. We also talked about whether they could picture themselves there, with all our boys agreeing that the library’s study pods were brilliant!”

For these members of Year 12, the visit to St Mary’s followed last Wednesday’s university fair, open to Years 11 to 13, as well as pupils from nearby Queen’s College, London. This well-attended event ensured our young people could talk with over 20 representatives from institutions across the UK and beyond, learning more about higher education opportunities.

Mrs Deedat, Head of Sixth Form, added: “It was wonderful to see so many universities, from all over the UK and the world, last Wednesday. I’d also like to thank all members of staff and representatives from PTA who helped ensure our event was a great success.”

These activities form just part of the work undertaken by Wetherby Senior’s Sixth Form team to support the further study ambitions of all. At present, our current Year 13 hold 120 offers, across 35 subjects, at universities around the UK and at 18 institutions in North America, France, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands.
